What is a space heater?
A space heater is a device that heats an enclosed space through radiation or convection. A convection space heater circulates heated air to heat a room. What is the difference between a space heater and a portable electric heater?
A space heater is designed to heat the air in a specific area. It is generally intended for outdoor use or in a small room with minimal airflow. A portable electric heater is designed to heat an area as large as a room and is intended for indoor use.
Why do I need a space heater?
In my past apartments, the radiator in the bedroom was always freezing cold in the winter. It’s not like I live in the Arctic. What I need is a space heater to keep my feet toasty when I was sitting at my desk. It was small enough to fit under the desk and kept my feet nice and cosy.
Space heater shapes and sizes
There are three main types of space heaters convection, radiant, and combination heaters.
A convection heater heats the air that then circulates and transfers the heat to the objects in the room. Convection heaters come in two main varieties: forced convection and natural convection. In a forced convection heater, a fan or blower pushes air over the heating element to circulate the heat. In a natural convection heater, the air movement is caused by the heat itself. Natural convection heaters are usually less expensive than forced convection heaters but they do not distribute the heat as well. Radiant heaters use infrared radiation to transfer heat.
A radiant heater has no moving parts so it is very efficient. It uses very little electricity and can be controlled with a switch. It is generally smaller than a convection heater and will only heat a small area.
A combination heater combines the features of both a radiant and a convection heater. They have a small heating element (like a radiant heater) and a fan or blower that circulates the heated air (like a convection heater). Portable electric space heaters A portable electric heater is a great choice if you need to heat a large area.
Other than the 3 mentioned, you may also want to consider the Tube Heater. A tube heater is a metal cylinder that contains a coiled heating element. Tubular heaters are designed primarily to provide background heat, so they can be used to keep frost away or heat smaller spaces to a comfortable temperature. Tube heaters come in many different sizes but the most common ones are 40 inches and 60 inches long. The smaller size is used in garages, tool sheds and other small enclosed areas. The larger size is used in basements, attics and other large spaces.
You may also want to consider the smaller fan heaters. This is the type of heater I used under my desk to keep my feet warm. They have an electric heating element and a small fan blows the air over this warming it. Perfect for toasty feet.
What is a bladeless fan heater?
A bladeless fan heater is a small electric fan that is used to produce heat. The fan blows air that is heated by an integrated heating element. How do bladeless fan heaters work?
What is a bladeless fan heater for?
A bladeless fan heater is for heating up an area that is cold. Generally, it is used in living spaces but really can be used in most places where there is a power outlet. Use it to warm any area. Bonus is that in the summer months it can be used to cool down areas.
How much does a bladeless fan heater cost?
The cost of a bladeless fan heater will vary depending on the brand and model you get. But, they are becoming more affordable as other brands are released.
Is a bladeless fan heater safe?
Yes, a bladeless fan heater is extremely safe. Generally speaking, it only produces about 1/2 the heat of a regular heater and generally uses less electricity than some other heaters.
Where are bladeless fan heaters used?
A bladeless fan heater can be used anywhere there is a power outlet. The heating element is inside of the fan unit, air flows over it and comes out of the slots around the hoop warm. This means it’s safe to use in your home, office or other space where you need to warm up the room.
The Difference Between Space Heaters and Bladeless Fan Heaters
Space heaters can be powered by either electricity or gas. These heaters are known to be able to heat a room quickly, so they’re usually placed in rooms that are used frequently.
A bladeless fan heater is a bladeless fan but with a heater function. These are powered by electricity. The air is warmed as it passes overheated ceramic pebbles, or other heated elements, inside the fans loop. This air is then blown out of the hoop.
As the air circulates, it cools down and becomes colder than the air surrounding it, which then pulls in more heated air from all around the room. This process continues until the whole room is evenly heated.
How do I choose a space heater?
There are many factors to consider when choosing a space heater. Some of the things you will want to think about are:
- Power source – Will it be electric or gas?
- Capacity – How many watts will it output?
- Efficiency – How efficient is it at heating the space?
- Placement – Where will it be placed?
- Size – What size space heater will fit into my room?
- Safety – How safe is it?
Why should I choose a bladeless fan heater?
One of the reasons many would have been put off by a bladeless fan that was also a heater was price. There were just 1 or 2 on the market and they were expensive. Fast forward to today and more bladeless fan heaters are coming onto the market at reasonable prices.
There are a number of reasons why you should choose a bladeless fan heater in my eyes. Firstly, safety. You have no blades. The hot surfaces are inside the unit. So touching a heated element is made more difficult.
The second big reason is that it is both a fan and a heater and so can be used all year round. In the summer it is great for keeping you cool, and in the winter it warms your space.
In conclusion
My preference of choice is the bladeless fan heater. Why? Firstly it’s nice and cosy to use, having warmed air blown on you. However, it is also useful in the warmer months to blow cool air on you.
Bladeless fan heaters are more expensive than space heaters. However, I believe they have more all-round year usage.
And, if you do a little research you will find that they are often much more efficient than a space heater. I hope this guide has given you some food for thought and helped you to make a decision. If it has then please leave a comment below with your choice. This will help other readers like me who may be struggling with the same decision.
